This is a brief post, but important. It's in honour of my first ever, proper, broadsheet newspaper review. And it's a corker...if stingy on the stars. "[Ben] successfully sticks it to The Man in a vibrant, educational and funny show" - now that's a quote.

"A spirited attempt to restore science to its rebellious status of "rock and roll"." - The Age, April 11, 2007

Just for the record, though: yes, I was uncool, geeky and bullied in primary school - Craig Wellington (of Wellington Who, which is awesome - go see it) had it easy when the kids called him Doctor, they called me "Doctor Who freak" and chased me across the playground, mockingly chanting the chorus from "Doctorin' the TARDIS". By the end of High School, however, I was totally cool. I'd starred in the most popular school play ever, won a bunch of Eisteddfod prizes for the school, and - as part of our farewell year 12 extravaganza - played my first rock gig with a student band, singing Spiderbait's "Old Man Sam" to a packed assembly hall. We rocked.

Oh yeah, and I'm going to be singing a song with 80s Enuff late this Friday night at Trades Hall. Be there!

P.S. it frightens me that you were covering Spidey in high school. We were still sneaking out of windows to go see them and drink underage beer when I was in high school. I thought we were closer in age than that??

Well, some thoughts on that: the song was still new, it was my last year of high school, and they made it big up Byron Bay way very early on. So much so, I thought they were local for a long time. I think we're only one year apart...I was 28 last Friday. You're 29, aren't you?

Oh well done you. I wish I could come see your show. That is a tops review.

I've sent an email to the Skeptics recommending they come view your show. Sounds like a hoot.

Thanks! I usually try and contact them, but I think I may have missed them this time round, though a member did come on Tuesday.

We have to get you together with the Consortium of Genius. I don't think the planet could handle the accumulation of science coolness.

Well, I have to admit, the only way I think I could kick things up a notch now is to perform with a band. I'm getting some practice in soon - we're having a They Might Be Giants tribute night, "Birdhouse", in aid of Asylum Seekers, and I'll be performing. Go on, have a guess which song I'll be singing...

Hi there you - I saw the review last night when sitting having a drink with Miss Malissa, and you know - she called your review "awesome" and she's right.

It was an awesome review and MUCH MUCH better than many of the better known lads and ladettes! Stars, smars - it was a ringing endorsement to go see your show you brilliant brave geeky lad.

Enjoy the warm fuzzies.

Awwww...you guys! You're right, it's a fantastic review. I am stoked. Found a little gem in the Age comedy blog today: a reader commented with this review:

Another very enjoyable experience was the Science-ology show. Young and old were catered for in a slick, informative, well-prepared show. We'll all question Sam Neill's credentials from now on and wonder whether "real science" will get a guernsey in the election pork barrelling as a result of Ben McKenzie's efforts.

Awesome! If it's a night where I'm not dashing off to see something or perform somewhere else, we'll have to have a drink and catch up.

I believe I'll be coming with Julian's gathering Tuesday 24th. Catching up would be great if possible :-)

Rock on!

If I was not so strapped for cash after the travel jaunt I'd fly down to see you!
I'll be landing in Bris Vegas on Wednesday :)

Speaking of which... I have to pack... A busy weekend in London lay ahead!

I've never understood the Age star rating system. Take this Dylan Moran review:

"I was a little unmoved"
"I didn't feel ... that I was in Comedy Church."
"material is driven by gender ... nothing wrong with jokes about the differences between men and women per se, perhaps, beyond the fact ... I can't really stand them."
"average and often quite cold moments"
"comedy half-bakery"

That's a 3 1/2 star review. WTF?

Pics from Sunday night's show ...

Didn't get ideal seats for photography and
was attempting not to stick the camera in your face.

Happy to come along again and get better ones :)
