I wouldn't try too hard to figure out a place for the master in the continuity.
By the time of The Deadly Assassin the master was apparently on his thirteenth regen. Then he used the Keeper of Traken's power to steal a new body. Then he got miniaturised by his own tissue compressor and burnt to a crisp (I think that was a Peter Davidson episode) That was the point in which a fan could fairly assume he was dead, so it was a little irritating to have him re-appear with no explanation (though given his exit, no explanation would have satisfied...) After that he got turned into some sort of cheetah creature, and after that he was executed by the daleks (???) after which he turned into a slug. It was all a bit stupid really. Maybe this is an earlier version of the master?
