Impro Sundae returns this Sunday, January 28th! What better way to finish off your Australia Day weekend than by heading down to the Comic's Lounge at 5pm for an afternoon of improvised hilarity? That's two hours of professional impro comedy for $10, and you can be home in time for tea! Genius. You can also catch The Crew on the Comedy Channel during their all day live Stand Up Australia marathon on Australia Day - and those very same Crew members will be the ones performing on Sunday. Try before you buy, if you will.
On a similar note, something I always forget to spruik are our Impro Workshops, run by the lovely and talented Janelle Koenig. These have moved to Tuesday evenings at 6:30 this year, and cost just $8 for an hour or so of professional level improvisational practice and training in a friendly atmosphere. I'll be there most weeks, and it's frankly a bargain when you consider that you also get into that week's Impro Sundae show for free (meaning you get cheaper entry and the workshop).
Also: My friends Mr. Al and Mr. Nick are among the ten finalists of Mtv Australia's one80 Project, a competition in which the two winners will be funded to "develop and shape their original pilot into a full-length multi-platform drama". By drama, they mean scripted and acted program, not necessarily a dramatic concept. I still haven't seen the full-length pilot, but a director I know described seeing it as a "life-defining moment" (in a positive way), and a bunch of other people whose critical faculties I respect also liked it. I have seen their live stuff, and the short "trailer" on the web site, which though disjointed has some hilarious moments, and I reckon they should get a shot at making something which looks like money has been spent on it.
