Sometimes, it makes crazy sense
Sep. 6th, 2003 04:35 pmWHITE WOLF, INC. and author NANCY A. COLLINS sue SONY PICTURES, SCREEN GEMS and LAKESHORE ENTERTAINMENT for "Underworld" copyright infringement
I was all ready to write this off into the same basket as the real muggle case; i.e., essentially true, but with no basis for legal action (the woman in question did write books about muggles long before Harry Potter became famous, but the similarity seems to end with a magical theme and some, admittedly very close, name similarities).
Then I saw in the White Wolf press release that they cite sixty "points of unique similarity" between Underworld and the Vampire and Werewolf products. That's a fair few in a 121 minute film, though to be fair I think it would be pretty hard to make a film about vampires and werewolves fighting a secret war for centuries without at least a few similarities sneaking in from the volumes of stuff White Wolf have published in the last twelve years. I guess it's more likely to damn the film if Nancy Collins is vindicated in saying that the film's plot is based on her 1994 story Love of Monsters.
Surely this is only a win for Sony Pictures - no doubt every dubious White Wolf fan will now be rushing to see the film.
